The Laboratory of Law and Informatics (LLI) was founded in October 2015 and is part of the Law School of National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, one of the largest and internationally recognized universities. It is a newly established research laboratory with the purpose of advancing research in the field of law and new technologies.
Legal Informatics is an innovative, multidisciplinary field focused primarily on the relationship between law and computer science. The subject has been offered since 2000 as a course at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the Law School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens. The lab addresses educational and research topics in two distinct areas of Law Informatics: i) Information Technology (IT) law and ii) the application of computer applications in law (Legal Informatics).
Among the advantages of the lab is the capacity of recruiting and managing multidisciplinary scientific groups in Greece and abroad with the main purpose being that the research and training matters are dealt with in an innovative, holistic, and multicultural environment. Furthermore, the participation of scientists that apart from their research interests they also have an experience with law practice bolsters the value of quality of their lab research.
Goals
The Laboratory's goals are as follows:
- To promote research in the field of Legal Informatics and the utilize the latest technological developments
- To foster synergies with the Greek and the international scientific communities, as well as participate in various research and educational programs
- To collaborate with other public and private entities for the formation of legislative suggestions
- To develop research infrastructure for the promotion of access to public sector information, legal information systems and databases
- To create job opportunities for PhD candidates, researchers, and postgraduate students, while also specializing researchers in the specific field of Legal informatics.

Role within projects
The Laboratory of Law and Informatics is actively involved in a wide range of research programs (private, public, national, European, and international). Its research activities are characterized by their innovative nature, proposing new methods for addressing critical issues when law meets new technologies. The Laboratory collaborates with various organizations and institutions to contribute to research on topics such as data protection, intellectual property in cyberspace and dissemination of legal information through digital platforms. Research results are shared through papers, books, periodicals, and are also available via the lab’s website.
